7th District race now “leans” toward Democrats

(CNS) – An influential news site with a high success rate of predicting election winners has changed its rating of Virginia’s 7th Congressional District from “toss up” to “lean Democratic.”

The Cook Political Report, a non-partisan site that analyzes elections and campaigns as well as political trends, made the change Thursday.

In the 7th District, first term Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, will face Republican challenger Nick Freitas on November 3rd. Rep. Spanberger has $4,085,176 cash on hand, while Freitas has $352,982.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorsed Rep. Spanberger on Sept. 2. A few hours later, the National Federation of Independent Businesses endorsed Freitas. Freitas was also endorsed by President Trump on Oct. 8th. Trump tweeted, “Nick has my Complete and Total Endorsement. A warrior for Virginia and the USA! Big on protecting your Second Amendment!”

Healthcare has been a key focus for both Spanberger and Freitas during their campaigns.

Spanberger supports strengthening the Affordable Care Act, while Freitas supports repealing the ACA in favor of a different system, saying that he believes the ACA created unnecessary problems during its implementation.

Freitas was quoted during a town hall on September 15 saying “the only thing worse than expensive medicine is no medicine.”
