Heat warning: Juneteenth Festival time change

Cooling centers open throughout Newport News

In preparation for a heat wave expected to impact Virginia, the city is adjusting the schedule for the Juneteenth Freedom Festival and plans to open public cooling centers. The festival will now take place on Saturday, June 22, from 4.-8 p.m., at Victory Landing Park.

Enjoy exciting entertainment by Roberta Lea (4 p.m.); Clear Vision AGO-AME Story Adventures (5 p.m.); and Tank and The Bangas (6:30 p.m.). Indulge in delicious foods and beverages; shop handcrafted vendors, visit with informational exhibitors, participate in interactive games, activities, and much more.

Cooling centers will open on Thursday, June 20. Residents are welcome to visit cooling centers throughout the city to get relief from the heat. Hours of operation for the cooling centers are:

The Pearl Bailey, Main Street, and Grissom Libraries
Monday – Thursday:  10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Friday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturday: 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Sunday:  1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Brittingham-Midtown and Denbigh Community Centers
Monday – Friday: 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Four Oaks Day Service Center
The Four Oaks Day Service Center is open daily from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. for residents experiencing homelessness.

During the summer heat, remember to limit outdoor activity and ensure proper hydration. Take frequent breaks if working outside, and please check on friends and neighbors who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. City officials are meeting and will determine if cooling centers will be open this Sunday.
