After a three year pause in continuity following the Covid-19 pandemic, the African Film Weekend will return to the University of Richmond between September 8 and 9.
The event which celebrates the work of first time African filmmakers now in its 16th year will be freely open to the public.
Show casing a variety of art genres in film ranging from comedy to romantic and even documentary films, the art presented will focus on the issues raised by the Z generation of filmmakers with a focus on the future. Each film reflects on the ways the people of color in the US would like to depict themselves as they face the challenges of a global society.
“I hope that for a weekend, the University and the greater Richmond community will gather under our symbolic baobab tree to view how issues of importance are conveyed by young African filmmakers,” says Kasongo Kapanga, the event’s organizer and chairman of the department of languages, literatures, and cultures at the University of Richmond.
