The Youth Career Program (YCP) purposed to empower local youth and engage businesses designed for Newport News residents aged 16 – 24 is back for another year. The program which offers valuable work experiences to local youth and provides businesses with a unique opportunity to support the next generation of professionals invites both returning and new businesses to become worksites and help mentor and guide youth into the workforce.
The YCP offers Newport News youth an opportunity to apply for paid work experiences in various city departments and local businesses. This provides them with an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build essential skills for the future. It also offers businesses the chance to become partners by serving as worksites where young people can develop their skills by creating a sustainable pipeline of talented individuals for the local workforce.
“The Youth Career Program is a vital component of our Youth T.H.R.I.V.E initiative announced last year,” said Mayor Phillip Jones. “Our youth gain the experience they need to succeed in their future careers while also contributing to the growth and success of our local businesses. By partnering together, we can build a stronger, more resilient community and provide Newport News youth with the tools to thrive.”
The Youth Career Program is an exciting opportunity for Newport News’ youth and businesses to come together, create opportunities, and make a lasting impact on the community.
Newport News resident youths aged between 16 and 24 are encouraged to not miss the chance to apply in the program designed to provide valuable mentorship and work experience that will prepare them for future career success. They are reminded that this is an opportunity to earn, learn, and grow in a professional environment.
Local businesses are also invited to get involved by partnering with the YCP and offering worksites for participants.
This partnership will help shape the future of Newport News’ workforce, empower the youth in addition to giving businesses the opportunity to recruit and bring in new ideas from the youth as they nurture local talent for their growth.
To apply as a youth participant or to learn more about becoming a partner business, visit the official Youth Career Program Website before May 1, 2025.
